Working in coordination with the International
Society of Arboriculture and local agencies in Greece and elsewhere, this is a program designed to extend
Olympic environmental work to a world stage. This internet-based, international program advocates the
critical importance of Urban Forestry and its link to an improved quality of life. Anyone, anywhere in the
world can plant a tree in their community in honor of the Athens 2004 Olympics and register it on the AEF
website. AEF will provide each Olympic tree planter a certificate recognizing his or her role in enhancing
the environment.
The Greek goddess Athena was the
goddess of wisdom, protector of cities. The olive tree was sacred to her. Poseidon, the god of the Sea, and
Athena were in competition to become the patron of a new city. Poseidon gave the first horses to the
people, but Athena struck the ground with a rod and first olive tree sprung, a symbol of peace and prosperity.
She was chosen as the patron goddess of the city which was called Athens, in her honor.
