CALLING ALL SCHOOLS TO PARTICIPATE!
OLYMPIC YEAR GLOBAL OLIVE WREATH
The Olympics are returning home in 2004! This Olympic year the summer games will return to the land of
their birth, Greece and the whole world is celebrating this homecoming!
Schools across the globe will take part in the first of its kind Olympic Year Global Olive Wreath Project! To celebrate
the Olympic dimensions of Sport, Culture, and the Environment and to welcome the Olympic spirit into our local communities,
the Athens Environmental Foundation (AEF) created the Olympic Year Global Olive Wreath Project (a.k.a. World Olympian School
Champion Project).
The project is designed to unite Olympians and school children locally in what has become a worldwide homecoming
celebration. Working in cooperation with the World Olympians Association (WOA) and regional Olympian Associations, AEF
seeks to accomplish the mutual goals of the organizations by reaching children all over the world with a positive
message about the Olympics and about the environment.
In this program, Olympic athletes visit schools as ambassadors of Sport and the Environment to inspire children
about the meaning of "BEING A CHAMPION, AND BEING A CHAMPION FOR THE ENVIRONMENT." AEF cooperates with Olympian
associations to train and organize Olympic athlete speakers and hold events in schools from the Elementary to the
University level.
As part of the project, each school that holds an event will be added to the Global Olive Wreath, an international
tree-planting initiative created by AEF.
The Global Olive Wreath: To form the "wreath," trees will be
planted along the Olympic torch route to stand as a lasting memory and a symbol of the Olympic commitment to improving the
global environment. The torch will pass through all the major continents, beginning in Olympia, Greece and finally arrive
in Athens, Greece for the opening of the homecoming games. The plan is to create a "green highway" along the torch route
with linear forests that will stand as living testaments to the Olympic Ideals of sport, culture and the environment.
Extended "branches" from the Global Olive Wreath, will reach into some of the most troubled places on earth in an effort
to draw them into the wreath of prosperity and peace. Plantings will take place in over 1500 schools in 200 countries and
include places like Jerusalem, Baghdad, Kosovo, Belfast, and Ramallah. The planting will be under the direction and
guidance of the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). Over 200 schools, primarily in Europe, have already
participated.
